Wind storms are defined by high winds with little or no precipitation.

Did you know that 45 mph winds can tear down tree limbs, and pull loose shingles from rooftops?

When winds reach in excess of 55mph, trees can be uprooted; possibly falling on homes or buildings and shingles can be torn away from rooftops.

High winds are known to cause significant property damage; especially straight-line winds.

Here are 5 quick tips to prepare your property before the next wind storm comes to your hometown.

  1. Fix What’s Broken – Walk your property and take notes on items that need repairing or replacing.
  2. Before a Storm – Secure your outdoor items such as patio furniture, grills, trashcans, sporting equipment and children’s toys.
  3. Trees/Shrubs – Trim the loose branches and cut down dead trees or hire a tree removal service for this. Trees falling on homes can cause significant damage and even injury to occupants.
  4. The 4 Weak Spots in your home are your roof, windows, doors, and garage doors. These locations are most vulnerable in high winds so be sure to maintain them.
  5. Prepare an Emergency Plan – Have an emergency kit including a flashlight and batteries, first aid kit, blankets, food supplies, medicines, and water.
